Alcohol Use Disorder<\/a> alcohol syndrome (FAS) happens when a person consumes any amount of alcohol during a pregnancy. Alcohol use during pregnancy can interfere with the baby\u2019s development, causing physical and mental defects. Fetal alcohol syndrome is the most severe condition within a group of conditions called fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASDs). Fetal alcohol syndrome is a condition in a child that results from alcohol exposure during the mother’s pregnancy. Drinking alcohol during pregnancy can cause the child to have disabilities related to behavior, learning and thinking, and physical development.<\/p>\nFetal alcohol spectrum disorders are caused by a baby\u2019s exposure to alcohol during pregnancy. The resulting conditions may cause physical, developmental, or a mix of both physical and developmental disabilities ranging in severity from mild to severe. While FASD presents lifelong challenges, there is help and hope for children and adults living with FASD. Treatment will vary greatly based on the specific diagnosis, the particular symptoms, and the environmental context. Early intervention has been shown to improve outcomes significantly.<\/p>\n

A small 2020 study involving 46 caregivers of children with FASD found that caregivers tend to experience elevated levels of stress, which can negatively affect their mental and physical health.
